Treasure Tshabalala (born 1952) is a South African actor and radio DJ best known for playing Timothy Gumede in the sitcom Nomzamo.

The veteran radio personality has been active for over 50 years, with experience at Swazi Radio, Radio Capitol, 702, Metro FM, and Jozi FM. He currently presents Late Nite Love Songs on Hot 91.9FM.

Early Life

Treasure Tshabalala was born in 1952 in Soweto, a township in Gauteng, South Africa.

Career

Tshabalala started broadcasting in the 70s. He began on the radio long before he got onto television screens. He landed his first job at Swaziland’s Radio Metro. He returned to South Africa to explore other opportunities.

Upon his return, Tshabalala participated in theatre and continued to search for a radio job. He was later employed at a data company and trained as a programmer.

He had his acting breakthrough after being cast in the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy. He landed another role in another movie, Stoney: The One and Only. He landed other acting roles in television shows such as Generations, Muvhango, 90 Plein Street, Shaka Zulu, and Jacob’s Cross.

In 1987, Tshabalala bagged a role in the mini-series Shaka Zulu. He then landed another role in the Italian made-for-TV movie The Vulture is a Patient Bird in 1989. He appeared in other films, including “Stoney The One and Only” in 1986, “Great Afrika” in 1988, and “Windprints” in 1990.

In 2009, Tshabalala was cast as Uncle Godfrey in Mama’s Boy, a one-hour drama which was part of the eKasi: Our Stories series. In 2025, he landed the role of Uncle Bhekumuzi in the local drama series Skeem Saam.

In addition to acting, Tshabalala worked at Swazi Radio in 1972, Capitol Radio from 1979 to 1985, and Radio Metro from 1986 to 1992. He was also a co-presenter of a soccer series on SABC1.

In 2006, Tshabalala also co-presented ngoMgqibelo. Known for his deep, unique voice and fluency in Zulu, English, and Swazi, he appears in various radio shows, television programs, and adverts.

Personal Life

Treasure Tshabalala is still alive and has six children. He grew up in Soweto, Gauteng.
