Early Life

Leera Mthethwa was born on 7 December 1990 in Pretoria, the northern part of the Gauteng province. Growing up, she wanted to be a performer.

When her teacher asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would say Brenda Fassie, which was the best way she could explain what she wanted to be.

Education

Mthethwa attended Pro Arte Alphen Park in Pretoria at 13. She enrolled to study drama at AFDA after matric. She also holds an honors degree in drama from the University of Pretoria and a degree in screen acting.

Career

Mthethwa started attending auditions in 2014 and working as an MC. She has appeared in many productions since her venture into acting. She has been in Generations: The Legacy, Soul City, and City Ses’La, among others.

The actress plays Jackie “Mam Jackie” Hlungwani, a no-nonsense teacher in Mzansi Magic’s Gomora. She initially auditioned for the role of Pretty in 2019 but wasn’t taken. She received a call a day after production started, when they needed a teacher.

She has worked with professionals and young stars, including Thembi Seete, Zolisa, and Mama Connie. She also plays the sharp-tongued mother, Mampho, on Mzansi Magic’s drama series Kokota.

Leera appeared in season 8 of SABC1 drama-education series MTV Shuga Down South as Nurse Keitu. She played Queen Modise in the Netflix series Redemption and Malebo in the Netflix series Real Estate Sisters.

Aside from acting, Leera is a seasoned voice artist and Master of Ceremonies (MC). She has hosted high-level events. She was the MC at SRS’s Black Tie Gala Dinner Event, which celebrated the company’s growth.

Some of her clients are Powerball, Sun International, Old Mutual, Vodacom, and being The Voice of the SAMAs 2022.
