Mmabatho Montsho (born 19 October 1983) is a South African artist, writer, actress, and film director. She is best known for playing Lumka Dhlomo in Generations and as Thembi Phakathi in Rhythm City.
Montsho has starred in many productions, including A Place Called Home, Jacob’s Cross, and independent films. She also performs in dance, theatre, and visual arts, and plays the saxophone. She was appointed one of Ekurhuleni’s 2010 World Cup ambassadors.

Early Life
Mmabatho Montsho was born on 19 October 1983 at the then Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa. She has two brothers and a sister.
As a child, she moved around with her family and grew up in Carletonville, the Free State, and the City of Ekurhuleni.
Education
Montsho studied at Greenside High School. After matric, she enrolled to study Audiovisual Multimedia at the University of South Africa.
In 2010, she enrolled in a film-making course in Los Angeles, United States. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Screen and Script Writing.
Career
After high school, Montsho started doing business. She and her friend from high school launched Black Olive Designs, designing and selling clothes at the B&B Rooftop Market. In 2004, their line was displayed at the South Africa Fashion Week.
The actress was on the verge of doing a music business learnership when she was cast as Lumka Dhlomo in SABC1’s Generations. She also played Lerato, the materialistic wife of the lead character, in the M-Net drama series Jacob’s Cross.
Montsho stars as young journalist Thembi Phakati in the e.tv soap opera Rhythm City. She is also an award winner. She has won a Style Award and one of Cosmopolitan’s Awesome Women of 2007.
Her film, The Award Ceremony, won an award at the 2020 Worldwide Women’s Film Festival in Arizona, the United States. She also won the Golden Horn Award for Best Achievement in Script in a TV Drama.
In April 2009, Montsho began hosting the SABC2 arts and culture magazine show Artcha, starting with its third season. She was appointed as one of Ekurhuleni’s 2010 ambassadors.

The actress has produced movies including Nothing For Mahala, A Hotel Called Memory, and Happiness Is A Four-Letter Word. She joined the SABC1 reality series ‘Play Your Part’ as a co-presenter, alongside Katleho Sinivasan, in 2012.
In 2015, Montsho produced the short film ‘The Grooms Price’, which was funded by the NFVF Female Film-Makers Slate. She portrayed a Nandi, a lawyer and compulsive perfectionist, in the romance movie ‘Happiness Is A Four Letter Word’, released in 2016
She appeared as a judge on the SABC3 reality competition series The Final Cut in 2017. She has a web series titled ‘Women and Sex’, which seeks to open up dialogue around issues perceived as taboo in a way that privileges women.
Aside from acting, Mmabatho is a director with several directing credits. She directed the soap opera Scandal!, MTV Sugar Down South, and the SABC1 sitcom Thuli noThulani.
Montsho confirmed that she had gone to thwasa and completed her training in 2012. She also said she had a calling and took time off from the spotlight to focus on it.
She says she started having visions and felt “tremendous energy flowing from a young age, and knew her ancestors were calling her. She did not disclose if she had been called to be a sangoma or a herbalist.

Mmabatho Montsho is married to former EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.
