Msawawa (born 7 July 1989), real name Siboniso Dlamini, is a South African Kwaito musician. He rose to fame as a young artist in the genre with hits like “Bowungakanani“.

The musician has released many songs, including singles like “Bayeza” (2022) and “IZANDLA PHEZULU” (2024). He has also collaborated with other artists. He released his debut album, “The Hurricane”, in 2001 and his second album, “Home Sweet Home”, in 2003.

Early Life

Msawawa was born Siboniso Dlamini on 7 July 1989 in Clermont in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, to Leonard Dlamini. His father was his manager during his peak as a child star in the 2000s. He has a brother, Obed Dlamini.

Education

Msawawa attended Jules High School in Malvern, east of Johannesburg. He made news for “ditching school” and was absent from school for 57 days in 2007.

Career

Msawawa was the youngest kwaito recording artist in the country after he shot to fame at age 10. He collaborated with child star Mzambiya on the hit Bowungakanani. He also owns a record label, Msawawa Music Production.

His father, Leonard Dlamini, appointed himself as the Msawawa’s music manager, but the kwaito kid star fired him. After he fired his father, he asked his former manager, Oscar Mlangeni, to take him back in 2002.

Kwaito child stars, Msawawa and Mzambiya, broke into the music scene in 1998 as a kwaito duo. They released hits together, including ‘Wawungakanani’ and ‘eZola’. They were later discovered by the owners of Bulldawgz Entertainment, Nimrod Nkosi and Oscar Mlangeni.

He and Mzambiya were on a United Nations mission together with children from other parts of the world.

The Bowungakanani hit-maker has released albums and many hit tracks. He has also worked with Tsekeleke on the song “Big & Small” in 2004.

He released the single “Izinja Zam” featuring Mroza Fakude in 2017 and another single, “Bayeza”, under his recording label on 22 July 2022. He also worked on a song with DJ Bongz featuring Noycdee and Terence Da Poet titled “Le Mfundo” and has been in the music industry for over 20 years.

Msawawa switched from kwaito to gospel after being born again. He released a gospel song titled “Thandaza”.

In July 2022, Msawawa gave an interview on Tbo Touch’s show on Metro FM and attended the All Black Affair event in Botswana. He has won two Metro Awards, including Best Newcomer and Song of the Year.

Aside from music, Msawawa is also a businessman and a philanthropist. He runs the Msawawa Dancing Academy, the Msawawa Youth Charity Foundation, and the Msawawa Artist Development organisation. He also launched a Tshisa Nyama business in Clermont Township in Durban.

Msawawa hosted about 4000 children and 100 grandmothers to celebrate Christmas Day with them on 23 December 2023.

Personal Life

Msawawa paid lobola for his girlfriend, Angela Gwala, who is 10 years older than him. They had planned for an izibizo and white wedding at Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, on 7 December, but they decided to separate. He returned to his hometown in Clermont, Durban.
