Rina Hugo was born on 13 March 1949 in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Education

Veteran singer Rina Hugo holds a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus) degree from the North-West University (then Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education). She was a member of the Alabama Student Society.

Career

Hugo has sung in a wide range of genres, including Opera, oratorio, operetta, musicals, art song, and light music. Among her songs are “Hoor Jy My Stem”, “Genadelied”, “More Lyk Dit Anders”, and “Jerusalem”.

In the mid-1980s, Hugo released her hit song Troepie Doepie. She, along with Bruce Sanderson, won the ATKV Crescendo in 1978.

Apart from singing, Rina has portrayed roles as an actress. She has appeared in movies such as You Must Be Joking! (1986). She was inaugurated as a living legend in the South African Legends Museum on 26 January 2020.

Personal Life

Rina Hugo and her musician husband Johan van Rensburg have two children, a daughter, Anri van der Linde, and a son, Riaan. The couple and their son contracted COVID-19 in 2021 but have since recovered.
